Genesis in 5 minutes with Creature Creator from Spore
The premise of Microcosmic GodSpore is both simple and complex: life from start to finish. Will Wright of Sims fame has created a game so sweeping that you really have to wonder if it can be pulled off. Broken into five distinct phases of game play: tide pool, creature, tribal, civilization, space, you play god—though it's more the watchmaker than the Zeus-type throwing lightning bolts and taking the shape of animals to have sex.
Spore has also been in the news for the Mac this year. A mobile component of the game was previewed for the iPhone as part of the Apple Event in March. Before that, at Macworld Expo 2008 the Creature Creator was up and running, and now it's available as a demo to download. That's the good news. The bad news is the system requirements will be keeping more than a few Mac users from playing iGod.
The game was ported to Mac OS 9.2 in 2001. Unlike many of its contemporary real-time strategy games, Sacrifice places little emphasis on resource gathering and management. There is no system of workers; the players' wizards collect souls to summon creatures, and their mana —energy for casting spells—constantly regenerates.

PPC Graybeards, no Spore for you. And not for you Mac mini owners, and anyone who purchased a MacBook before late last year, as 'this game will not run on the GMA 950 class of integrated video cards.' For those left, you can run the Spore demo, but with a few restrictions that will make you feel like the second-class gaming citizen that you, as a Mac user, are.
Advertisement My first disappointment was that Creature Creator only runs in full-screen mode if you don't read the directions. As Open Forum member Muriac pointed out, Command+Return toggles between full screen and whatever resolution you have it set at. Running at 1680 x 1050 does require full-screen mode to access the settings menu, though. The Mac version started up at a default resolution of 1024 x 768, which stretched like crap on an iMac at 1680 x 1050. Once I fixed that and cranked up the graphics, Spore looked and ran great on a 2.0 GHz Core Duo iMac, at least as much of it as I was able to run.
Unfortunately, the demo only allows you to choose a few parts when creating your creatures. You need to pay $10 to get the fully functional game, which will be included as part of Spore when it is released later this year. You can still create creatures and share them with the central database now—a big part of game play in Spore—but creatures created on Windows PCs with the paid version of Creature Creator will be better. The web page states that you will be able to buy Creature Creator for the Mac soon, but I might just wait for the full game to be released. After all, waiting for platform equivalency is as much a part of Mac gaming as the playing.
UPDATE:TUAW is reporting a reader named Clancy found a fix for running on GMA 950 Macs.

Let's hear it for vigilant readers!
